Mitsubishi Electric Group recently announced (November 20, 2024) that it will invest approximately 10 billion yen to build a new power semiconductor module packaging and testing plant at its power device manufacturing plant in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The plan was originally announced on March 14, 2023 and is expected to begin operations in October 2026.
In recent years, as a key device to help achieve a decarbonized society, the demand for power semiconductors that efficiently convert electricity has continued to expand. Among them, power semiconductor modules that help to achieve miniaturization, lightweight and simplified design of inverters are widely used in many fields such as electric vehicles, home appliances, industrial equipment, renewable energy, and railway traction systems, and the market is expected to continue to expand.
As the main factory for the packaging and testing process of power semiconductor modules, the factory will integrate the packaging and testing production lines that were previously scattered in various places, and streamline the production process from component storage to production and manufacturing to final delivery. At the same time, a new system will be introduced to automate production management and product transportation to improve production efficiency. In addition, Mitsubishi Electric will strengthen its integrated system covering design, development, production technology verification and manufacturing to enhance product development capabilities. Mitsubishi Electric expects that the construction of the new factory will support its rapid and stable supply of products to meet the growing market demand for power semiconductors, while accelerating the energy-saving process of power electronic equipment in various fields and contributing to the green transformation (GX).
In connection with the new factory, Mitsubishi Electric has been designated as a corporate entity of the Green Asia International Strategic Comprehensive Special Zone by Fukuoka Prefecture for the second time. By taking advantage of the preferential policies of this special zone, Mitsubishi Electric will be able to further strengthen the production system of its new power device manufacturing plant in Fukuoka Prefecture.
